Your Guide to Blocked Drains and Toilets

This is your guide to Blocked Drains and Toilets – Discussed by M Plumbing

What are the signs of a blocked toilet?

  • The dirty toilet water won’t flush away
  • You may still see toilet paper in the toilet pan
  • The water in the bowl may be rising

What are the signs of a blocked drain?

  • Sulphurous egg type smells which indicate trapped and rotting elements
  • Slow draining sinks
  • High rising sinks or toilets which look like they may overflow
  • Gurgling toilets, sinks or showers

If your toilet or drain are overflowing or looks like they might then you should act quickly and shut off the water supply at the mains or behind the toilet. You can stop the water filling the toilet bowl from the tank by taking the toilet lid off and closing the open flapper.

For any plumbing, drain or toilet problems it really is a good idea to know where you shut off your main water before it happens as if it’s an emergency its not always easy to find in a panic.

For most homes, the mains water shut off is located where the water comes into the property or at the water metre and most commonly under your kitchen sink. Sink and toilet shut off’s are mostly found under the sink or behind the toilet.

When your toilet or drains block not only is it inconvenient but it can really smell so its always a good idea to know some tips of how you can try and rectify yourself.

Tips for Blocked Drains and Toilets

  1. The first thing to try is a plunger as its normally the best way to unblock a toilet or drain
  2. If you haven’t got a plunger then try adding one cup of baking soda into either your toilet or drain and leave for a few minutes and then gradually add in two cups of vinegar, being aware of bubbling and splashes in the eyes. The liquid in the toilet or drain will then bubble and you need to leave it to work for 3-5 minutes and then try flushing the toilet or running water in your sinks to see if it has cleared
  3. If you have one then try using a plumbing snake, always use one that specifically made for toilets as normal ones will scratch your porcelain toilet bowl. Put the head of the plumbing snake into the toilet bowl or drain and slowly turn the handle until you feel resistance and then wind it back in, If you think the blockage has loosened then try flushing the toilet or running water into your sinks to see if it has cleared. Try this a couple of times if it doesn’t work to start with
  4. Sometimes washing up liquid or shampoo with boiling water can unblock your toilet or drains. Give it a go as you don’t have anything to lose
  5. Try a specific drain or sink blocker, always remember there are different ones for drains and sinks but there is no harm in doing both if you don’t know where the blockage is
  6. Lastly, if it hasn’t cleared trying these options then you should call a Professional Plumber who will be able to clear a blocked toilet or drain quickly and efficiently with minimal mess. You know that if you call a plumber that any blockages will be completely removed compared to the options above which can sometimes mean you have reoccurring problems

Blocked Drains and ToiletsWhat are the 4 ‘P’s’ of Flushing?

The 4 P’s of flushing is simple, these are the only things you should flush down your toilet or drains to prevent them from blocking. Anything else may not block your toilet but will block your drains and pipework further down. Blockages create wear and tear on your pipework and if it keeps happening but clearing itself you will still end up with problems later down the line.

  • Toilet Paper (not too much)
  • Poo
  • Puke
  • Pee

Anything else could or will block your toilet making it smell, making a mess and causing you a lot of inconvenience.

Things you shouldn’t flush down your Toilet

  • Wet Wipes/Baby Wipes
  • Cleansing Pads
  • Cotton Pads/Balls
  • Cotton Buds
  • Paper
  • Feminine Products
  • Cooking Grease/Food. Grease should never be poured down any drain or toilet
  • Dental Floss
  • Nappies
  • Pills
  • Paper Towels/Tissues
