If you want a new outside tap fitted for your garden, you’ve come to the right place! With the recent sunshine setting us in the mood for more Summery activities, we think about what can be achieved by having an outside tap on your home. Whether it’s watering the flowers or washing the car, so many things can be done with an outside tap that isn’t possible without it!

What are the benefits of having an outside tap?

There are so many unique benefits of having an outside tap; some obvious and some not so obvious! You may have thought about getting one fitted but weren’t sure if they were worth spending money on. Well, we’ve got all those questions answered below, so read on and see what they are.
There are so many things that an outside tap is helpful for, but we can only mention a few in this article! Look at our short list below of things we couldn’t do without!

  • Washing the car with a power hose attachment
  • Washing down pets after a muddy walk
  • Watering the flowers without having to refill a watering can several times over.
  • Cleaning bins & other grime from things you don’t want to clean in the house
  • Cleaning bikes, scooters & other mucky items
  • Giving builders access to water without having to run a line straight from the kitchen tap (This is useful for any building work that is going on for your home)
  • Filling the paddling pool in the Summer (Limited use, we know)

These are only a few to name! There are so many different uses that you may have for an outside tap. We’ve found that it’s an excellent option rather than scrambling a DIY fitting on the kitchen tap, which ends up spraying water everywhere.

Finding the right plumber for you:

Plumbing is often considered a menial task, but it is essential to have the right person install your new tap. It is important that you choose a plumber who will provide you with the best service possible.

Here are some questions to ask a potential plumber when choosing them:

How long have they been in business?

Plumbers need to be licensed, so if they haven’t been around for long, it could indicate they aren’t experienced enough to handle your job. On the other hand, if they have been in business for many years, they may be reputable and can provide their customers with excellent service.

What qualifications do they have?

If your plumber has qualifications or plumbing advice & experience, this is excellent news! It means they know what they are doing and can complete the job efficiently and effectively. However, if your plumber doesn’t have any qualifications or experience, this can be concerning as it shows that they might not be able to provide you with good service.

Where can I fit an outside tap?

Outside taps can be fitted to any wall with access to a water line in your home. The most common place for an outside tap is outside the kitchen window since the sink is behind the wall, giving access to the rising main. This gives you easy access to the tap and excellent high pressure since it’s coming from the mains. If this isn’t how your home is arranged, our plumbers can figure out other options to move forward.
Outside taps can be fitted to the side of your house, in a garden or anywhere else you want to water your plants or wash your car.

The location of your outside tap will depend on how much space is available and where the water supply comes from.

If you have a private well, you may need to dig out a section of the garden. Still, suppose you’re connected to the mains water supply. In that case, you can fit an outside tap as close as possible to the nearest point where mains water enters your home – either at the bottom of your property or the boundary between your property and that of your next-door neighbour.

You’ll also need to consider whether there’s enough space for an outside tap or whether installing two taps – one inside and one outside would be better.

Why use M Plumbing?

M Plumbing can provide an outside tap for the fitting & installation. Still, if you decide to purchase a tap or already have one, you must ensure it complies with British Standard regulations. British Standards state that any outdoor tap must have check valves installed. It’s the check valve that ensures that water can only flow one way, which is from the mains. This is to avoid any contaminated water returning to the main water supply, possibly tainting the rest. Since the outside tap is close to the garden, dirt & other contaminants can get into hoses/piping, which could return to the mains without a check valve.

How to fit an outside tap

Ideally, you want to hire a plumber to fit an outside tap. We at M Plumbing can provide such a service.

Fitting an outside tap is a job you can do yourself, but getting help from a professional is always best if you’re not 100% sure what you’re doing.

The first step is to ensure the water supply pipes are in good working order, checking for leaks and replacing old pipes. You’ll also need to find the water meter (usually located at the side of the house) and then turn off the main water supply valve.

Next, use a spirit level and a pencil to mark where your tap will go on the wall. Use masking tape to protect any areas that tiles or slabs will cover, as they’ll get ruined when tiled over.

Drill holes in the bottom of your sink cabinet using a drill bit slightly smaller than your tap’s spout thread (if you don’t have one available, use an adjustable spanner). Push the spout through one hole until it reaches the inside of the cabinet; then screw it on tightly by hand until you feel resistance – don’t use power tools or pliers as this could damage your sink or spout.

Now you need to install your waste pipe under-floor so it can drain into your drainpipe underneath.
